My research examines the formation of Islamic intellectual traditions, with particular attention to Sufism, theology, religious authority, and the transmission of knowledge across the medieval Middle East.
Islam and Politics in the Modern Middle East
I examine the history of Islam and politics in the modern Middle East, tracing how late Ottoman transformations, imperial collapse, colonial rule, and the rise of nation-states reshaped Islamic political thought and movements. My work analyzes changing forms of sovereignty and religious authority, competing visions of Islamic governance, and their effects on institutions and everyday life from the late nineteenth century to the present.
Coloniality, Nationalism, and Religion in Modern Kurdistan
I examine the modern history of Kurdistan through the interconnected histories of empire, coloniality, nationalism, and religion. My work traces how imperial legacies, colonial and nationalist forms of knowledge production, and the consolidation of modern Middle Eastern states reshaped political identity, minoritisation, and historical memory from the late Ottoman period through the twentieth century.
